Thrust of the Arch

In an arch, stress flows outward fairly equally throughout as compressive thrust, which can be characterized as moving compression.

For this reason, the arch can be made of parts, that is, separate units such as tiles, bricks and blocks, which load compresses. The arch is prevented from buckling by the inherent stiffness of these components.
