UniStates’ Industrial Trials Program (InTrialsSM program) is a joint undertaking with your company to re-engineer selected commercial parts and components with Reflexive Materials Technologies (RMT™ technologies). The intent is to improve the in-service performance and marketability of these products. The first step is to work together to identify and prioritize a list of your company’s current commercial products that we would expect to produce the greatest gains in product performance and profitability through re-engineering with RMT™ technologies. RMT™ technologies are especially advantageous for weight-limited applications where a high strength-to-density ratio, high stiffness, improved toughness, and affordability are important. Each selected product undergoes the same rigorous procedure in the InTrialsSM program, which follows these six basic steps:

  • Modeling & Simulation
  • Production Analysis & Commercial Evaluation
  • Prototype production & Testing
  • Process Engineering and Demonstration
  • Tooling
  • Manufacture of Demonstration Products

Each step has a specific Target Milestone that must be met. The final Target Milestone is: An efficient system for the production of the RMT Informed™ product or structure to replace its in-service counterpart as it is currently in-use in specific commercial applications. The goal is to extend the commercial success of the product or structure. It’s like a refill, which can be repeated again and again through the RMT Precision Materials and RMT Informed™ Product Life Cycle (see below).

The InTrialsSM Program

This chart describes the six basic steps of an InTrialsSM program and the Target Milestones associated with each step.

Step
Description
Target Milestone
Modeling & Simulation UniStates’ software for computer-aided modeling, optimization, and visualization of the design of the RMT Informed™ product will be used to re-engineer the selected product for optimal in-use performance in its current commercial applications. Computationally optimized design of the RMT Informed™ product and simulation of its enhanced performance in current commercial applications.
Production Analysis & Commercial Evaluation UniStates’ software for computer-aided modeling, optimization, and visualization of RMT™ manufacturing systems will be used in the analysis and harmonization of the RMT Informed™ product and RMT™ process designs with Licensee’s plant/facilities to define computationally the optimal system for the commercial production of the RMT Informed™ product in accord with Licensee’s product re-marketing strategy. Product Business Case - an assessment of the commercial potential of the computationally refined design of the RMT Informed™ product under the Licensee’s product re-marketing strategy.
Prototype Production & Testing Laboratory prototype production, testing, and tuning of the design of the RMT Informed™ product for optimal commercial performance according to the Product Business Case. Product Commercialization Scheme – a schematic of the integrated steps to commercialization of the validated design of the RMT Informed™ product consistent with the parameters established by the Product Business Case.
Process Engineering and Demonstration UniStates’ software for computer-aided modeling, optimization, and visualization of RMTSM manufacturing systems will be used to define modifications to Licensee’s current manufacturing process, and/or alternative process(es), to simulate production of the RMT Informed™ product on a commercial scale consistent with the Product Commercialization Scheme. RMTSM manufacturing system - computationally optimized manufacturing process and simulation of its operation.
Tooling UniStates’ software for computer-aided modeling, optimization, and visualization of RMTSM manufacturing systems will be used to design and engineer the additional tools and fixtures required for demonstration of the RMTSM manufacturing system. Laboratory prototype production, testing, and tuning of tooling design(s) using a laboratory scale manufacturing facility, i.e., UniStates’ mini-production line.
Manufacture of Demonstration Products UniStates’ mini-production line will be appropriately tooled for testing and refinement of the RMTSM manufacturing system through the production of a limited number of commercial-grade demonstration units of the RMT Informed™ product for mechanical and market testing. An efficient system for the production of the RMT Informed™ product to replace its in-service counterpart as it is currently in-use in specific commercial applications.
